Jack Reacher series(잭 리처 시리즈) - Blue Moon (2019) (5) - Reliability, For the sake of something/somebody, Dead (영어표현)

드디어 이번 포스팅에서 주인공 Reacher가 나옵니다. ㅋㅋ 오래 걸림

At that same moment Jack Reacher was seventy miles away, in a Greyhound bus, on the interstate highway.  He was on the left side of the vehicle, towards the rear, in the window seat over the axle. There was no one  next to him. Altogether there were twenty-nine other passengers. The usual mixture. Nothing special. 

Except for one particular situation, which was mildly interesting. Across the aisle and one row in front was a guy asleep with his head hanging down. He had grey hair overdue for a trim, and loose grey skin, as if he had lost a lot of weight. He could have been seventy years old. He was wearing a short blue zip jacket.
Some kind of heavy cotton. Maybe waterproof. The butt end of a fat envelope was sticking out of the pocket.

It was a type of envelope Reacher recognized. He had seen similar items before. Sometimes, if their ATM was busted, he would step inside a bank branch and get cash with his card from the teller, directly across the counter. The teller would ask how much he wanted, and he would think, well, if ATM reliability was on the decline, then maybe he should get a decent wad, to be on the safe side, and he would ask for two or three times what he normally took. A large sum. Whereupon the teller would ask if he wanted an envelope with that. Sometimes Reacher said yes, just for the sake of it, and he would get his wad in an envelope exactly like the one sticking out of the sleeping guy’s pocket. Same thick paper, same size,  same proportions, same bulge, same heft. A few hundred dollars, or a few thousand, depending on the mix of bills.

Reacher wasn’t the only one who had seen it. The guy dead ahead had seen it too. That was clear. He was taking a big interest. He was glancing across and down, across and down, over and over. He was a lean young guy with greasy hair and a thin goatee beard. Twenty-something, in a jeans jacket. Not much more than a kid. Glancing, thinking, planning. Licking his lips.

The bus rolled on. Reacher took turns watching out the window, and watching the envelope, and watching the guy watching the envelope.

이번에는 괜찮은 표현들이 있군요. 우선 단어부터 보겠습니다.

1. Across the counter

이 표현은 일반적으로 사용이 되면 '카운터에 걸쳐'라는 뜻이 되겠지만 관용적으로 사용되면 조금 뜻이 달라집니다.

이 표현은 '합법적으로, 정당하게'라는 뜻으로 

2. Reliability

이 단어는 reliable이라는 형용사가 더 유명합니다.

Reliability는 -ty를 붙여 명사형으로 만든 단어로서 '신뢰할 수 있음, 믿음직함, 신뢰도, 확실성'이라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다.

위에서는 ATM의 '신뢰도'가 떨어진다고 Reacher가 이야기하면서 이 단어를 사용하였습니다.

예문 1)에서는 '신뢰성'이라는 뜻으로 사용이 되었습니다.

예문 2)에서는 '안정성'이란 뜻으로 사용이 되었습니다. 이 reliability는 '확실성'이란 뜻이 있기 때문에 '안정성'으로도 해석이 가능합니다.

 

3. For the sake of something/someone

이 표현은 '~을 위해서' 혹은 '~때문에'라는 뜻입니다.

예전에 Batman: Telltale에서 리뷰를 한 적이 있었죠.

그때는 sake만 했었는데... 사실 이 표현은 sake 단독으로 사용이 되기보다는 for the sake of로 많이 사용됩니다. 그리고 of 뒤에 다른 사람이나 사물이 오죠. 만일 자신을 위해서라는 뜻을 하기 위해서는 for my sake라고 사용을 할 수도 있습니다.

위에서는 Reacher가 은행에서 돈을 찾으면서 뭉태기로 받을 때 단지(just) '그 돈봉투, 돈다발을 받기 위해서'라고 하면서 이 표현을 사용하였습니다.

예문 1)에서는 아이들 '때문에'라는 뜻으로 사용이 되었습니다.

예문 2)에서는 just for the sake of it으로 사용을 하여서 '그것 자체를 위해서'라는 뜻으로 사용이 되었습니다.

 

4. Dead

대부분 dead는 '죽은'이란 뜻으로 많이 사용됩니다.

그런데 명사나 형용사 앞에서 꾸며 줄 때에는 조금 뜻이 다를 때가 있습니다. (즉, 이 녀석은 부사, 형용사를 왔다 갔다 하는 것이죠.)

잘 생각해보면 Dead 죽었기 때문에 딱 그것 즉, '완전한, 정확한'이란 뜻으로 사용이 됩니다.

그래서 예전 리뷰 표현에 보면 dead ringer라는 표현에서도 rigner가 '경주마'였고 dead는 '똑 닮은, 딱 정확히'라는 뜻으로 사용이 되어있었죠.

위에서는 dead ahead라는 표현으로 '바로 앞에'라는 뜻으로 돈봉투를 가진 사람의 바로 앞에 있는 사람을 보고 dead ahead를 사용하였습니다.

예문 1)에서는 '되게'라는 뜻으로 easy '쉬운'을 꾸며주었습니다.

예문 2)에서는 '완전한'으로 silence '고요함'앞에 사용되어 꾸며주었습니다. 여기서는 '완전한'이란 뜻 말고 '죽은 듯'이란 뜻으로도 사용이 되어도 좋습니다.

일반적으로 읽으면 되는데 해석을 하려고 하니까 조금 어색한 느낌이 있네요.

여하튼 그렇게 어려운 문장들은 아닌데 영어 소설 처음 읽으시거나 혹은 익숙하지 않으시면 어려울 것 같아서 해석을 해보았습니다.

 

 

책을 읽으면서 모를 수 있는 단어들을 모아봤습니다. (파란색은 어려운 단어, 초록색은 문화적 단어입니다.)

 

Overdue: 기한이 지난, 이미 늦어진, 벌써 행해졌어야 할

The rent is now overdue.

(이제 집세 지불 기한이 지났다.)

 

Trim: 다듬다, 손질하다, 잘라내다

Trim any excess fat off the meat.

(고기에서 과다한 비계는 모두 잘라 내어라.)

 

Recognize: 알아보다, 인식하다, 인정하다, 승인하다

I recognized him as soon as he came in the room.

(나는 그가 방에 들어오자마자 그를 알아보았다.)

 

Bust: 부수다, 급습하다, 흉상, 반신상

I bust my camera.

(내가 카메라를 고장 냈어.)

 

Decline: 감소, 감소하다, 줄어들다

The clothing industry is on the decline.

(의류 사업은 사양길에 있다.)

 

Decent: 괜찮은, 품위 있는, 적절한, 꽤 큰

He did the decent thing and resigned.

(그가 체면을 지켜 사직을 했다.)

 

Wad: 뭉치, 덩이, 담보, 저당

He pulled a thick wad of $100 notes out of his pocket.

(그가 호주머니에서 두툼한 100달러짜리 지폐 한 뭉치를 꺼냈다.)

 

Whereupon: 그래서, 그 때문에, 그 결과

He told her she was a liar, whereupon she walked out.

(그가 그녀를 거짓말쟁이라 했고, 그래서 그녀가 나가 버렸다.)

 

Bulge: 가득 차다, 불룩하다, 툭 튀어나오다

Her pockets were bulging with presents.

(그녀의 호주머니는 선물들로 불룩했다.)

 

Heft: 들어 올리다, (무게를 가늠하려고) 들어 올려 보다, 무게, 중량

Those sacks have a lot of heft.

(자 자루들의 무게가 엄청나다.)

 

Proportion: 부분, 비율, 균형

Water covers a large proportionof the earth's surface.

(물은 지구 표면의 많은 부분을 덮고 있다.)

 

Glance: 흘낏 보다, 대충 훑어보다

He risked a glance at her furious face.

(그는 과감히 그녀의 격분한 얼굴을 힐끗 한번 보았다.)

 

Greasy: 기름투성이의, 기름이 많이 묻은, 지성의

Too much greasy food isn't good for you.

(너무 기름기 있는 음식은 너에게 해롭다.)

 

Goatee: 염소수염

He has a goatee.

(그는 염소수염을 기르고 있다.)

 

Roll on: 시작되다, (자동차) 굴러가다, 운행하다

The planets roll on in their courses.

(행성은 그 궤도를 운행한다.)
