On the island kingdom of Melnibone all the old rituals are still oberved, though the nation's power has waned for five hundred years, and now her way of life is maintained only by her trade with the Young Kingdoms and the fact that the city of Imrryr has become the meeting place of merchants. Are those rituals no longer useful; can the rituals be denied and doom avoided? One who would rule in Emperor Elric's stead prefers to think not. He says that Elric will bring destuction to Melnibone by his refusal to honour all the rituals (Elric honours many). And now opens the tragedy which will close many years from now and precipitate the destruction of this world.

A Melancholy King:
A Court Strives to Honour Him
IT IS THE colour of a bleached skull, his flesh; and the long hair which flows below his shoulders is milk-white. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody, and from the loose sleeves of his yellow gown emerge two slender hands, also the colour of bone, resting on each arm of a seat which has been carved from a single, massive ruby.
The crimson eyes are troubled and sometimes one hand will rise to finger the light helm which sits upon the white locks: a helm made from some dark, greenish alloy and exquisitelymoulded into the likeness of a dragon about to take wing. And on the hand which absently caresses the crown there is a ring in which is set a single rare Actorios stone whose core sometimes shifts sluggishly and reshapes itself, as if it were sentient smoke and as restless in its jewelled prison as the young albino on his Ruby Throne.
Moorcock Michael의 Elric of Melnibone이라는 1972년작 판타지 소설입니다. 우리나라에서는 유명하지 않지만 하드코어 판타지 팬들에게는 꽤나 알려진 소설입니다. 앞으로 하루에 한 장 정도의 분량을 가지고 영어 공부를 하려고 합니다.
첫 줄부터 3줄짜리로 기를 죽여 놓네요 ㅋㅋㅋ
차근차근 공부해 봅시다.

왕국의 힘은 500년 동안 쇠퇴해 왔습니다.

그리고 지금은 신생 왕국들과의 무역을 통해 왕국의 생명력을 이어나가고 있죠.

또한 그 증거로 Imrryr의 도시는 상인들의 만남의 장소로 되어왔습니다.
문장의 구조는 어렵지는 않지만 많은 문장들이 섞여서 그런지 이해하기가 조금은 어렵군요.
1. Wane
wane은 동사로 쓰여서 '약해지다, 줄어들다, 작아지다'라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다.
윗 문장에서 사용이 되었듯이 has waned라고 되면 '약해지고 있다'를 표현할 수 있지만 숙어를 사용해서 다음과 같이 표현할 수 있습니다. 'on the wane'

보면 on the wane을 써서 '약해지다' 표현한 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

그 투구는 검고 초록색을 띤 합금으로 만들어졌고 아주 정교하게 용이 날아가려고 하는 모습을 묘사해 놓았다.)
한 문장이 정말 더럽게 기네요 ㅋㅋ
그래도 정말 판타지 세계에서 나올 법한 내용이죠 ㅋㅋ
문장 자체는 어렵지 않으니 단어 한 번 볼게요.
2. Exquisite
이 단어는 꽤나 고급 단어임에도 불구하고 여러 곳에서 사용하며 영화나 소설에 단골로 등장합니다.
exquisite은 형용사로써 뜻은 '매우 아름다운, 정교한, 강렬한, 예리한'등으로 해석됩니다.
이 단어는 예술품이나 혹은 음식을 먹었을 때에도 쓰이고 감각을 나타낼 때도 사용되기도 합니다.
윗 문장에서는 -ly를 붙여서 뒤에 있는 moulded(만들어진)이라는 동사를 꾸며주고 있죠.

용례를 잘 익히면 좋습니다.
3. Take wing
딱 단어만 보면.... 날개를 취하다??????? 응????
조금만 유추해 본다면 take wing 날개를 사용하는 거니까.... 날다??
네ㅋㅋ '날아가다'라고 해석할 수 있습니다.
가끔은 비유적으로 '펼치다, 몰두하다'라는 표현으로 사용될 수도 있어요.

Melnibone왕국의 쇠퇴는 500여 년 동안 계속되었지만 아직까지도 옛날 전통과 의식들을 고수하고 있습니다. 쇠퇴해 가고 있는 왕국은 신생 왕국들과의 거래들로 연명하고 있으며 많은 상인들의 만남의 장소가 되고 있죠. 하지만 황제 Elric의 측근들이 말하길 이 왕국의 끝은 피하기 어려우며 그 끝이 가깝다고 합니다.
우울한 왕 Elric
새하얀 해골같은 색의 피부를 가지고 어깨까지 넘어오는 머리를 가진 노란 가운을 입고 있는 사람이 루비로 만들어진 왕좌에 앉아 있습니다.
그는 거치대에 있는 멋진 투구를 괴상한 초록색의 반지를 낀 손으로 쓰다듬고 있습니다.
